A couple things as it relates to this polygamist ranch fiasco. First, I find it strange that the very institutions that are undermining the institution of marriage, promoting sexual promiscuity, and questioning the government’s authority to regulate morality at the personal level, are so adamantly opposed to the upbringing of the children at the Yearning for Zion ranch.
In a short piece from NPR, the citizen-subsidized airwave polution company (sorry for the rant, but “Fresh Air” is on the top of my misnomer list), today (I also note that there is no author credited with the story, though it did make it onto NPR’s top three RSS feeds for iGoogle.), there were some statements about how sheltered the children were, but also about how “at least 20 girls under 16 were subjected to sexual experiences.”
Kids Removed from Sect Have Never Seen TV

Day to Day, April 24, 2008 · Most of the children removed from the Yearning for Zion ranch in Texas have never watched TV, listened to the radio or surfed the Web. Arriving at temporary homes in their pioneer outfits, they are struggling to adapt, says NPR’s Wade Goodwyn.According to Child Protective Services (CPS), at least 20 girls under 16 were subjected to sexual experiences at the ranch. Several, officials say, are pregnant.
Mothers trying to get their children back, meanwhile, say these instances were an aberration rather than the norm and that they have been treated inhumanely by CPS.
It seems bizarre that an organization, which promotes sexual freedom/promiscuity among children, would have any issue with this. In fact, I’d be interested to see what the definition of “sexual experiences” they are using. It seems to me that it might just be the case the children in NPR’s audience have been subjected to “sexual experiences” at a higher rate than you’d find at the ranch. The very fact that these children have been protected from “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!” means they’ve been protected from at least two or three “sexual experiences” each week.
I’ve wondered this myself. Why is it the media becomes so upset with polygamy when they tend to scoff at Christians because of their prudishness in regards to sexuality. Yet another proof of Romans 1.
“21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,” (Romans 1:21-22, ESV)
And yet we also were once so foolish. God has never let me forget telling my wife that Christians were stupid, irrational and weak people.
“3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:3-6, ESV)
